Bastet
Very nasty tetris game - Bastet (stands for "bastard tetris") is a free (GPL'd) clone of Tetris(r) (built on the top of petris by Peter Seidler) which is designed to be "as bastard as possible": it tries to compute how useful blocks are and gives you the worst, the most bastard it can find. Playing bastet can be a painful experience, especially if you usually make "canyons" and wait for the long I-shaped block.

NOTE: With the following command, you can make the binary setuid games, so normal users can save their highscores. This can be security hole!
chmod u+s /usr/bin/bastet
Boson
Real-time strategy game - Boson is an OpenGL real-time strategy game, with the feeling of Command and Conquer(tm) or StarCraft(tm). It is designed to run on Unix (Linux) computers, and is built on top of the KDE, Qt and kdegames libraries. A minimum of two players is required, since there is no artificial intelligence yet.

BZFlag
3D multi-player tank battle game - BZFlag is a 3D multi-player tank battle game that allows users to play against each other in a networked environment. There are five teams: red, green, blue, purple and rogue (rogue tanks are black). Destroying a player on another team scores a win, while being destroyed or destroying a teammate scores a loss. Rogues have no teammates (not even other rogues), so they cannot shoot teammates and they do not have a team score. There are two main styles of play: capture-the-flag and free-for-all.

Core Wars
Programmers war simulation game - Core Wars is a simulation game, nice for programmers. A number of programs are loaded into a virtual machine and executed. The programs can to crash each other, manipulate other programs, overwrite as much memory as they can, etc...
The "best" program is selected according to a scoring mechanism which involves the number of memory cells the program has overwritten, the number of other programs it has crashed and whether/when it crashed.
Two different languages are supported. The one called "Corewars" is easy to learn and described on the documentation. The second language, called "Redcode", is harder to learn but also more powerful.

A puzzle/action game - A puzzle/action game in which you rush to eliminate colored blocks before they fill your screen. Particularly clever eliminations cause garbage to clutter your opponent's screen. Who will survive the longest!? Playable both online and off.
Crimson Fields
A hex-based tactical game - Crimson Fields is a tactical war game in the tradition of Battle Isle. While not being an exact clone, it tries to keep closer to the very first part of the series than to the later ones, especially with regard to a rather simple rule set and straight forward game play.
A simple editor can be used to create custom level files.

Notes:

  • I use Apt/Synapsis to keep my Fedora Linux box up to date
  • These would also be available through YUM or some of the other updaters

For all you hard core gamers:

Some of you may be disappointed with the quality of games available for Linux. Waaah! 8^)

Take the money you save on buying a high-end WinDoze computer and buy a PS2 or XBox or whatever. Some of you are spending $1500+ on a gaming computer. Take that money and buy a nice big TV, PS2 and a whole bunch of games!

My oldest boy Dave, Jr. told me when he was up for Christmas that it's really kinda fun to just sit down and play pacman or some of the "old" classic games. There ya go. I have to agree!

It's all about having choices
That's one of the biggest reasons I prefer Linux over Windoze.
