WizarDave Goes Fishing
in Alaska
My best fishing trip ever
In 1977, Dad and I took a trip to Alaska. We had a great time sight seeing. We saw
Prudhoe Bay and all kinds of beautiful country. But the best part of the trip was the
fishing. We spent a week at a fly-in and fly-out fishing camp. They had several float
planes and would fly us out to various lakes, rivers and streams. It was a great fish
camp. The owner had the world record Caribou with bow and arrow. It was huge. He was
trying to sell the camp, so I don't know what the name of it is now.
Our first afternoon there, we caught dozens of 5-10# Salmon. Of course, that meant the
camp had lots of smoked salmon always available. We used spinning rods and Mepp's
spinners. Some of the guys used fly rods. They broke off a lot, but always had fantastic
fights.
Dad caught a huge King Salmon on one outing. Must have fought that fish for nearly an
hour.
I caught rainbow trout, greyling and salmon. Tons of them, I'm here to tell you! (OK,
maybe not tons, but there were a BUNCH)
I camped out one night with the guide. We cooked over an open fire. It was great. I
don't think I've ever had better coffee. He just threw the grounds right in a coffee pot.
I caught one rainbow that weighed over 10#. It was beautiful. I caught him on bright red
salmon eggs. I caught several others on spinners and spoons.
I remember one beginner fly fisherman who accidentally let his line hit the water
behind him while trying to cast. He caught a trout. It was pretty hilarious seeing him
struggle with that one. That should tell you how good the fishing was in Alaska!
I'll add some pictures when I get some free time.
