Crappie books

What does your local lake have? Crappie or bluegill? Both are fun to catch. They are good fish to start your kids on. They are both great eating. Get on a good school of them and you'll likely catch 20-30 of them, or more. That's more fun than catching 4 or 5 good bass. Especially if you're a kid.

Tackle: Lighter is better. I like ultra light spinning gear.
Lures or live bait: Minnows or worms work ok, but I've caught many more on small plastic jigs.
Bank fishing: Cast out and retrieve or use a long pole and dunk around a fallen tree.
Boat fishing: Structure! You have to find a fallen tree or sunken trees. If you're state allows, sink your own structure. Christmas trees work well.
If you catch one, there are quite likely a whole school. Don't give up too quickly. If they stop biting try a different color, a little different style of jig, or put a spinner on.

My uncle, cousin and I went to Pomme de Terre one time. We finally got on a school. My uncle in the back of the boat caught the fewest. My cousin in the middle and I in the front caught the most. We used both minnows and jigs. Both were effective. We ran out of minnows and decided to go get some more. Never did find the school again. We should have stayed there and used jigs until they quit biting.
